On an LA Whale Watching tour into the Pacific Ocean, you may get to see Orca Whales! Orcas are always a fan favorite, and a treat when you get to see one up close and personal.
Also known as Killer Whales, they belong to the oceanic dolphin family too, where they are acknowledged as the largest of the dolphins. They travel in groups known as pods, which consist of mostly mature females and their offspring. They’re known for their appearance of being all black with a white underbelly, along with a large white patch around the eyes.
This past June (2017), a pod of Orcas labeled as CA-51 were sighted first by Harbor Breeze Cruises around the San Pedro, and Palos Verde area. Luckily the founder of Harbor Breeze Cruises, Captain Dan Salas was following a pod of dolphins with passengers at the time. All of a sudden he noticed the dolphins disappeared and before he knew it, the pod of orcas appeared.
Covered by the OC Register, Captain Salas said the passengers had the chance to witness these orcas do backflips, and swim eye-to-eye with them. He stated, “You can see their power and how intelligent they are.” You can read the full article in the OC Register here, and read how this remarkable sighting emotionally touched other passengers on this tour.
- Fun Fact Alert!: This specific pod of orcas is also known to be the most playful orcas off our coast! Their names are Star, Bumper, Comet, and O’rion.
