Los Angeles Area Whale Watching Information
The Los Angeles area is one of the best places in the country for whale watching. Because of the warm temperatures and access to miles of coastline, opportunities abound to see many different varieties of whales and other marine life. Because of the migratory patterns of whales, you will be able to see different whales at different times of the year, making it an activity you will want to do more than once.
Whale watching enthusists are also lucky in the aspect that because of the water temperatures, we actually get to see the largest animals on the planet, the blue whale. Blue whale watching season runs from about June through December while gray whale season in Southern California runs from December to mid May so there is literally a full year long cycle of whale watching in the area.
Here are some companies in the Los Angeles area that specialize in whale watching:
Harbor Breeze - Harbor Breeze Cruises, located in Long Beach, has been in the whale watching business for more than 18 years. They offer year-round whale watching cruises as well as a host of other shorter harbor excursions. Their boats are specifically designed for whale watching with amenities such as stadium seating and flat panel televisions. They have also partnered with the Aquarium of the Pacific and have a biologist aboard each cruise. You will be able to ask questions and have a very enjoyable experience while learning many interesting facts.
Marina Del Rey Sportfishing - As the name would suggest, Marina Del Rey Sportfishing concentrates on fishing charters. They do however offer seasonal whale watching from December through April. They also offer private charters and group rates for whale watching excursions.
Dana Wharf - Located about an hour south of Los Angeles, Dana Wharf offers year round whale watching tours, seven days a week. They also offer sportfishing and boat charters.
